Zachary Levi: Career, Movies, TV Shows & More

Zachary Levi is an American actor whose career has moved between television comedy, superhero films, animation, drama, and action. Best known for playing Chuck Bartowski in Chuck, Flynn Rider in Disney’s Tangled, and Billy Batson in Shazam!, Levi has built a varied screen career over more than two decades. His recent work also includes the 2026 action thriller The Fix and the upcoming western Angel and the Badman.

Who Is Zachary Levi?

Born Zachary Levi Pugh on September 29, 1980, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Levi began performing at a young age. According to his biographical information, he acted, sang, and danced in school and local theater productions from childhood before pursuing professional acting. He later grew up in California, where his interest in performance continued to develop.

His professional screen career began in the early 2000s. One of his first major television roles was Kipp Steadman on Less Than Perfect, a sitcom in which he appeared from 2002 to 2006. That role helped establish him as a television performer before his career moved into a much larger spotlight.

Zachary Levi and Chuck

For many viewers, Chuck remains the role most closely associated with Levi’s television career. He played Chuck Bartowski, an ordinary computer specialist whose life changes after sensitive government information becomes embedded in his brain.

The series ran from 2007 through 2012, with Levi serving as its lead actor. He also directed three episodes, adding directing experience to his résumé. The role allowed him to combine comedy, romance, action, and character-driven drama, qualities that later became useful across his film work.

Chuck also demonstrated Levi’s ability to carry a series rather than simply appear as part of an ensemble. The show’s mix of humor and spy storytelling helped make his performance one of the defining parts of the series.

From Flynn Rider to Shazam

Levi expanded his audience considerably when he voiced Flynn Rider, also known as Eugene Fitzherbert, in Disney’s Tangled. Released in 2010, the animated film paired Levi’s voice performance with Mandy Moore’s Rapunzel. He later returned to the character in related Disney projects.

Another major turning point came with DC’s Shazam! in 2019. Levi portrayed the adult superhero form of Billy Batson, a teenager who can transform into an adult hero after receiving magical powers. He reprised the character in Shazam! Fury of the Gods in 2023.

What Is Zachary Levi Doing Now?

Levi continues to work in film. His 2026 project The Fix places him in a substantially different setting from his family-oriented and superhero roles. He plays Tucker, a member of a group of former CIA operators who become involved in a dangerous mission in Tehran after a failed operation in Afghanistan. The film, directed by Guy Moshe, opened in U.S. theaters on September 11, 2026.

Another upcoming project is Angel and the Badman, a reimagining of the classic western. Levi plays Quirt Evans alongside Tommy Lee Jones and Neal McDonough. The studio currently lists the U.S. theatrical release for October 9, 2026.

These projects show how Levi’s recent filmography continues to move between genres rather than staying within the superhero or comedy categories that first made him widely recognizable.

Why Is Zachary Levi Still Well Known?

Part of Levi’s lasting visibility comes from the unusual variety of recognizable characters he has played. A viewer might know him as Chuck Bartowski, Flynn Rider, Shazam, or one of his more recent dramatic characters without necessarily realizing how broad his filmography has become.

His career also crosses several generations of entertainment. Chuck introduced him to television audiences, Tangled connected him with Disney animation, and Shazam! brought him into the modern superhero-film landscape. His newer work adds another chapter rather than simply repeating those earlier roles.
